Synopsis
Knowledge is power. Power Corrupts.
In a world where the ancient Great Library of Alexandria was never destroyed, knowledge now rules the world: freely available, but strictly controlled. Owning private books is a crime.
Jess Brightwell is the son of a black market book smuggler, sent to the Library to compete for a position as a scholar... but even as he forms friendships and finds his true gifts, he begins to unearth the dark secrets of the greatest, most revered institution in the world.
Those who control the Great Library believe that knowledge is more valuable than any human life - and soon both heretics and books will burn...
My Thoughts
I would like to thank Allison and Busby for publishing this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and quickly loved and hated characters.
Jess is the son of a black market smuggler and in the beginning is a runner for his father. Jess already lost one of his brothers for smuggling books and it felt as though he was going to get into trouble to. But instead his father orders him to take a test to go to the Great Library and off he goes.
I really liked Jess as a young boy and the leading character. He had already been through so much, to then be forced away and told he wouldn't be able to come back if he failed, made me hate his father.
Scholar Wolfe was a curve ball and definitely not what I was expecting. But in the end, I found that I had come to respect him. There are definitely a few more curve balls in the book and some losses of characters that I was sad to see go (and some I wasn't).
My Rating
I'm going to give this book a rating of 4/5. In all I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely like to read the rest of the series. This book has certainly left me wanting to follow Jess through the rest of his journey.
